Derwent's most serious art pencils
I purchased this, as I already had the first 36 color issue, and I could now consolidate all 72 in one tin. I quite frankly do not remember if I got it from Amazon, but I did buy at least one of my 36 color sets from Amazon. I'm reasonably sure about that. This "Set of 36 Additional Colours" brings a rather needed complement to the first released 36 colors. The options for doing reds and blues were very restrained with the first set.The tin is so so, the usual pencil tin box with frail plastic inserts/trays. But hey, this is what you kinda expect.More generally about these Derwent pencils: The pencils are absolutely lovely. I have nothing to complain about how they go down on paper. They're individually somewhat different. But that is only to expect, since pigments are going to affect that. This is at least the same quality as Polychromos and Luminance, both of which I have full sets. And these pencils actually mostly complements those sets, rather than adding much redundancy. The real kick I got from them was that they contained so many real, realistic shades, so much more useful for realistic motifs, rather than just brilliant candy colors. There are of course huge technical problems with making brightly colored pencils with high lightfastness. Some colors simply can't be made currently. While there may exist rare pigments that measure up, they're not suitable enough for pencils, being not strong enough, too toxic, or too expensive. This probably affected the color range of these pencils. However, I regard it rather as a bonus and benefit than drawback. If you do realistic art, these colors are more useful. Though I would also add that Derwent's 72 is fairly complete enough, by itself. You do get enough (IMO) bright colors, at least with all the 72 colors. But if your interest is primarily bright, brilliant colors, you should maybe look elsewhere.Derwent states that these are "100%" lightfast. By that they of course don't mean that each color is perfectly lightfast. Almost nothing is. So it would be impossible, unless you would only have red ochre, yellow ochre and black. What they mean is 100% of the pencils, that is all the pencils in their "Lightfast" range, measure up to lightfastness ratings of ASTFM I or II (I being the best). The same standards as the best professional oil, acrylic and watercolor artist paints are judged by. And these ( I and II ) are the two ratings for art materials, which are generally considered as acceptable for art objects intended for direct, static display, like hanged on a wall. Ratings of III, IV, V. are not. Both Polychromos and Luminance are also rather lightfast, but I don't think either of them can boast about being all of the highest standards (that's my assumption). So that is what these pencils are about. If you're doing coloring books, or doing original illustrations for scanning, or other pictures which are stored in protected stacks or folders, you don't need them. But if you know that you will do stuff that you will be tempted to frame and hang, or suspect that someone else will, then maybe they are.

Quality and quantity
Superb quality, lightfast and wide range of colours. Also quite soft to mix/blend. Like other 'dry' art materials can be used with many other media. I added the recent "add on" sets to have the entire range. Recommended.

Great colours. Easy to work with. Lay down and blend beautifully. Great VFM in my view
