Okay arepa maker that stopped working in little over 2 years
I hope this review helps people use their money on something better, so I'm writing just the facts: I bought this arepa maker in March 2022 (~$35), because my old one (different brand/size) stopped working after 12 years. I make about 8 arepas every 2-3 weeks for a couple of meals. After I put the dough in, when I saw that the arepas were beginning to toast, I would take them out put them in my stove's oven to help cook the inside of the arepas. Then I'd wipe the maker clean and store it in the cupboard. That is, the maker got very light use from me, and I treated the maker with care. However, this maker stopped working yesterday (June 30, 2024)--by this I mean that the "on/heating" orange light went on but the maker didn't get hot, even after mutliple attempts. Today, June 30, 2024, I checked the price for a new one = ~$48. Is it worth the new price? Not to me. I'm sticking to making arepas with my budare from now on. (FYI: I put 1 star for temp control, because you can't control the temperature--the maker has only 1 temperature.)

AMO!!!

OK not bad - the arepas taste good
I'd heard that arepa makers help a lot so I thought I'd give it a try.Pretty simple, the arepas tasted good, but did not brown all that well with just one cycle. Don't like that there's no on and off switch. The whole ready light thing is goofy, and how do you do a second batch seeing the ready light is off? Now, I'm just timing them, about 8-10 minutes, flipping them half way. Don't pay attention to the ready light. Get them a little browned and you're good to go. I'm estimating about 1/3 c Harina Pan and 1/3 c water for each arepa. Maybe I need a touch more water as I do get some edge cracking. The first arepa I made was bland. Don't follow the instruction that come with the Imusa, use the ones from Harina Pan. Definitely add salt.I also add about 1 ts olive oil for each arepa. For the latest I added a half clove garlic to the ix. Don't think garlic is used much in Venezuela but it tasted real good and I'm a garlic fan. I think you should be able to experiment even if it's not according to Hoyle Venezuelan or Colombian arepas. The fillings are key. I've been using pulled pork, feta, roasted tomatoes, and a bit of butter.Note that if you put in an arepa that's a little too large, a thin flat ring will form around the arepa as it's squeezed down. Not a big deal really and not worth trying to get off, but a pain. I'm getting better at sizing.Still it's real simple to use, easy to clean, and the arepas taste real good and I guess that's all that matters in the end. Simpler than frying them yourself IMO. Just finished one now. Yum it was good!
