No Problems Separating Essential Oils
I almost didn’t buy this because another reviewer said it didn’t work for essential oil/hydrosol separation, but I decided I had to try anyway because I don’t want to have to safely store a giant, irregularly shaped, glass instrument like this.Fortunately it has worked beautifully so far. I have no trouble slowing flow down to a slow drip with or without the top on. I didn’t even use a ring stand. It’s very sturdy too. Feels like a Nalgene bottle.Exactly what I was looking for. Easy 5*.

Plastic or Glass?
I like that I can not worry about dropping this and having glass shards get everywhere. However, once the liquid is about an inch or two from the petcock, the cloudiness of the plastic material becomes apparent. For example, while separating liquid (even if one liquid is clear) layers, the turbidity of the plastic makes it look almost like an emulsion is present. Also, sometimes as you are draining, what you previously thought was a clear separation just ends up looking mixed as it gets closer and closer to the petcock. This is because your perspective has a liquid sandwiched between the closer front plastic and the farther back plastic….which increases the cloudiness/turbidity of the plastic. However, if you look closer you can reassure yourself that it’s just the composition of the plastic used.Theoretically, this is a great idea. Practically, they should change to a clearer plastic to mimic the transparency of glass because it’s a big trade-off. I’d rather be able to see clear separation than worry about my sep funnel breaking into glass shards everywhere. The former is something you would deal with every time you use it. The latter would be less frequent…hopefully.

I've broken too many glass ones !
It arrived early with my buck funnel that's the best part.

top leaks everywhere(no pressure required)
Used it for about 2 minutes before I noticed that it was gently leaking my product out of the cap. Ended up having to switch to a different funnel for the rest of the job. Would not buy again.

pours too fast
I had several challenges using this funnel. The first was because it was plastic (and I wished I had thought that through better). Because it is plastic and not glass it can not be used safely with a still. We used this to separate essential oil from hydrosol. We needed to collect the solution in a jar and then transfer it to the funnel because it is plastic and not glass (and the liquid is still hot after it condenses). We then needed to let it sit for 12-24 hours to let the oil separate out. The funnel pours very fast, and the nozzle is so insensitive that we lost most of the oil, and had to do it a second time. The second time my daughter helped, and initially she said that she did not know what I was talking about. She was able to open the valve and let the hyrosol out drop by drop, but there was ovedr a liter. She could not get it pouring faster. At that point we realized that she had left the funnel on the opening at the top and it created a suction. Once removed it flowed but was much more difficult to control. IF you want to use this funnel I would suggest intentionally creating suction at the top so that the flow is more controllable. It did ultimately work but was very challenging, and I now have a borosilicate (lab glass) funnel on the way so that the next time we can have the condensate empty directly into the funnel, which I hope has a more sensitive valve.Note this will be most relevant to those using it to distill essential oil, but I suspect most people will want more control and precision in the valve. Not only would I not purchase this again but after a single use, have a different separating funnel on the way.

Works great
you could start to see separation instantly. Great way to separate water from oil for your vacuum pumps.
